Leaving Batheaston we stop for Bkfst at Neston - 30
minutes to the Neston Farm
market on the Bath Road, Atworth, Melksham
London rd to bathford - onto A363 - to A365
A 3 hour drive down A365 to B3109 to A4 to A350 to M4 to A419 brings us to a location we saw on Escape to the Country that focused on Gloucestershire County, and featured a segment on St Marys church - High St Kempsford, Fairford,
Gloucestershire.
This is the site of the
oldest medieval stain glass in Britain
We picked up a brochure that depicts stained
glass window plan and pic of each one for later reference and slide show
Stopped in Lechlade On Thames - 28 minutes down
the A417
- Lunch at Lynwood and Co.
- Pass by Kelmscott Manor for a look at the grounds (it was closed that day)
Continue for 12 minutes on the A417 to another St Marys church,this time in Buscot, Oxfordshire
- This church contains stained glass from Pre-Rafealite painters
- Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, 1st Baronet ARA (28 August 1833 – 17 June 1898) was an English artist and designer closely associated with the later phase of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, who worked closely with William Morris on a wide range of decorative arts as a founding partner in Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. Burne-Jones was closely involved in the rejuvenation of the tradition of stained glass art in Britain; his stained-glass include windows in St. Philip's Cathedral, Birmingham, St Martin in the Bull Ring, Birmingham, Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Square, Chelsea, St Peter and St Paul parish church in Cromer, St Martin's Church in Brampton, Cumbria (the church designed by Philip Webb), St Michael's Church, Brighton, Trinity Church in Frome, All Saints, Jesus Lane, Cambridge, St Edmund Hall and Christ Church, two colleges of the University of Oxford
We continue 26 minutes down the A417 when we discovered and walked up
to the Faringdon Folly in Faringdon
- A display board of pictures describe the eccentric builder, Lord Berners
- This was the last folly to be built in UK 1935
- Built on site of medieval castle and site of Cromwell army battery of canon
- Restored in 1985 and now open to public
Travelling down the A417 to A420 to A415 to B4022 to Station Rd, within an hour, we reach our final destination of the day in South Leigh, Witney,
Oxfordshire
- This is a surprise stay at The Artist Residence at Masons Manor in Witney
- Cozy room with outside terrace in converted stable building
- Hotel is a grade two listed thatched building dating back to the 1700’s, starting as a farm and taken over as a pub in 1879. After a succession of owners, it was developed as one of the Artist-in-Residence locations in 2017
- Excellent Dinner at hotel ( K and A anniversary gift)
